December's Breath
of
Fresh
Air
from
Akasha.... |
|
Hi
Everyone,
Well, winter is
upon us and as
I don’t like
the cold very
much, I often
think I’d like
to be visiting
relatives and
friends in
Australia,
where it’s much
hotter.
Today is the
Solstice
(21st
December)
and
it is also the
shortest day –
which I do like
because after
today it’s
uphill all the
way to Spring
(at least
that’s what I
like to tell
myself).
However, it’s
important to
remember that
Winter is
actually a very
important time
and I say more
of this in this
month's
feature: Saying
Goodbye.
Here's what
else is coming
up...

Feature:
Saying
Goodbye....
This is the
time of the
year when
everything is
drawing in –the
days are
shorter, it
gets dark
earlier and
light
later.
The gardens are
put to bed –
preparing them
for the new
life in
springtime.
The lead up to
Xmas has an air
of expectation
- happy family
get-togethers,
the sharing of
presents and
for Christians,
celebrating the
birth of
Christ.
In Pagan times,
it was a time
of feasting – a
way to break up
the dark nights
of winter and
bring cheer to
the
heart.
But this time
of year is also
ideal for
reflection and
closure.
Nature does
this
automatically –
it quietens
down and many
animals
hibernate.
Everything has
an air of
stillness –
except amongst
humans who
continue to be
busy.
However, it can
be really
valuable to
take stock of
where you are
at the end of a
year. Has it
been the kind
of year you
wanted?
Did you fulfil
the goals you
set
yourself?
What do you
want for next
year and your
future?
Perhaps you’d
really like to
change your job
– or even your
career.
Are you in a
relationship
that’s past
it’s sell by
date?
All of these
are good
questions to
ask yourself
and reflect
on.
What did you
learn about
yourself this
year?
Did you grow in
some way or do
you feel like
you stagnated?
Are
you hanging
onto grievances
that need to be
let go or
perhaps you
have unfinished
business with
someone that
needs attending
to?
The latter is
particularly
important
because you
just don’t know
when it might
be too late to
tell someone
something – it
could be that
you are sorry
or that you
love
them.
I was really
reminded of
this last week
when I was
conducting a
funeral.
And of course
funerals are
not only
rituals to mark
the passing of
a life but an
opportunity for
us to consider
our own lives –
whether we are
living them as
fully as
possible and
also whether we
are expressing
gratitude for
what, and who,
we have in our
lives.
So as we draw
to the end of
the year, maybe
now is the time
to take stock
and decide what
it is you want
to let go of,
what you want
more of and
what you are
truly grateful
for.
My personal
letting go,
will be sorting
out the boxes
that have
remained
unopened since
we moved house
last
March!
Nothing is more
satisfying than
throwing or
giving things
away to create
more space and
a sense of
freedom.
That way, you
can be ready to
leap into the
New Year with a
fresher,
clearer
outlook.
So with that
thought in
mind, I’ll
leave you with
a thought from
William
Winstanley, a
17th
century writer
(and the
apparent
saviour of
Christmas!)…..
“Now Christmas
is
come
Let us beat the
drum,
And call all
our neighbours
together.
And when they
appear,
Let us make
them such
cheer
As will keep
out the wind
and the
weather”
Very
sociable!
