Career coaching
Do you want a better job - or a better
career?
There are times in most people's careers where they need to
review where they are going and what it is all
for. Most people are faced with several times in their
lives when they have a career choice to make. The challenge is
whether to make a career and life limiting
decision or a career and life enhancing
one?
Ask yourself:
- Do you have a job or a career?
- Do you currently like your job?
- Is your job working for you?
- Are you not working?
- Do you feel stuck, in a career plateau or a
bottleneck?
- Are you lacking opportunities for advancement?
Maybe you need to think about what you are doing with your
career right now. Is it going the way you want or is it time to
do something about it? Because the consequences may be
increasing frustration and dissatisfaction - or maybe an
acceptance of what is second best. Or maybe a whole new
approach to your life, what it means for you, what you want to
achieve, and the style of life you want to create.
Why have career coaching?
You may choose coaching for a whole variety of
reasons. Here are some:
- You have reached a turning point
in your career and feel unsure which way to go next
- Life-changing events, outside work, have caused you to
think hard about what is important and what you
really want - or made the existing or
previous work no longer possible
- Issues that have arisen in your
role and you need to decide what to do next
- Organisational change has affected you
and your role
- Personal change
- A need to take time out to review
where you are going
- Lack of career progression: you are perhaps beginning
to feel stuck
- A need to move away from what you
have been doing
- Feeling stale
- Seeking meaning and purpose in your
work
- Simply want a better life than what
you've got
A career coaching programme
We'd start by reviewing what is happening at the moment,
where you feel stuck and what you want from your career. Much
of the key work is likely to be in helping you decide what your
career vision is, what you want to achieve - many of us don't
really know that. Then we'd put in place an action plan to help
you achieve the goal. So we'd very likely cover such things
as:
- Managing change
- Effective career management
- Self-awareness
- The changing needs of organisations in the market
place
- Career vision
- Profile management
- Action planning
But we don't stop there. Good coaching will give you support
in rolling out your plans, in developing a strategy, in taking
the steps to realise your goals. This might include discovering
the key tools that will help you, any training and development,
overcoming any obstacles - in fact developing a whole new
approach towards your career.
